The Cart Horse Protection Association is an incredible, Cape Town based, non-profit who work tirelessly to improve the welfare of working horses and donkeys across the Western Cape. These animals often face tough conditions of long hours, poor equipment and inadequate care. The Cart Horse Protection Association tackles these challenges head on, offering farrier services, harness repairs and a committed welfare team that steps in when horses need urgent care.
One of their most recent initiatives is their Bit Guard Drive, which aims to prevent painful mouth sores caused by bits rubbing against the horse’s lips, a daily reality for many working animals. Bit guards are simple yet effective in reducing friction and preventing these injuries, offering immediate relief and long term comfort.
With the generous support of Western Shoppe, who offered us a discounted rate, we were able to donate 100 bit guards for this crucial drive. Such a small item, but one that can make a big difference.
This initiative reminds us that while our own horses are fortunate to receive top care, many are not. Sometimes, just R45 is all it takes to help a horse work in greater comfort. We encourage everyone to get involved, even the smallest donation can go a long way.
